“You Just Have No Imagination”

Posted by Steve on March 22, 2007

Half a Brain

“You just have no imagination!”  Would you expect to hear that said to a child or an adult?

An article by Mark Batterson in Winter 2007 Leadership Magazine told me that as folks age, imagination is lost and routine sets in.

“…studies have shown that the center of cognitive gravity tends to shift from right-to-left as we age.  In other words, memory overtakes imagination.  At some point, most of us stop imagining the future and start repeating the past.”

I pastor a senior adult church, so I live it.  I want to believe that they would like to learn and try new things.  But they often do not.  I want to speak in abstract theories and ideals, but they often don’t get it.  I want head out into the future like entrepreneur, but too frequently they want to hold on to the past.

Mark’s article suggests a quick formula for a fresh point of view…

change of pace + change of place = change of perspective

I’ll be preaching this Sunday about Habakkuk receiving a change of perspective.  I wonder how it will come across to my seniors?
