An Urgent Mission Beyond SC

Posted by Steve on December 6, 2007

I didn’t really know what all the hubbub was about when I attended the SC Baptist Convention Annual Meeting. I got that some folks think we should give more money to the SBC while decreasing the amount we keep in state. But it wasn’t clear to me.

Someone asked about this too through the Baptist Courier (See the article):

… nobody can tell me or has even come close to explaining the “urgency” for changing our distribution percentages from the current 60 percent in-state and 40 percent out-of-state to the eventual 50/50 split.

Hans Wunch has done a really good job of helping us to see what the urgency is really all about. See his explanation here.

The urgency is about prioritizing those who haven’t been given all the religious priviledges we have here in SC. Hans puts it this way:

There are 1.7 Billion people who live in areas where they have little to no chance of hearing the name of Jesus Christ. There are 0 [zero] people in South Carolina who fit that description.

This is like when my church gets a little motivated to get out and invite people to church. They go to the same people again and again. Then when those same people don’t come, they get mad and give up inviting. I tell them, “Go to someone else for a change. They know they’re invited. Go to places you’ve never been before; go to people who have never been invited.”

Admittedly, I don’t get all the political stuff at the Baptist Convention. I need to know some of it, but I just care very little for all of it. But Hans makes a very convincing, practical call to “missions” versus “ministry,” in my opinion. There is quite an urgent need when it comes to eternal souls.

  1. Thanks for the blog list… Of course I subscribe to yours… Next time I am visiting my parents, we will have to have lunch… They live on Banner Road in Elgin.

Lunch, Of course. But given your addictive habits with blogs, you probably need to be more selective with your subscriptions!

But lately I’ve needed the hits. My readership has been cut in half since Thanksgiving. Who knows why?? But I always have those who are being referred here because they are searching for the word “Hillbilly.” Again, who knows why?? Maybe, I need to blog more about Hillbillies?!

  3. LOL :) Everyone is in a lull it seems. Thank you for the thoughtful response to Brother Reid’s letter.

nobody asked my opinion–but….i usually only read when i see a picture. sometimes you are a little too in-depth for my midnight-browsing. i’m more into the ghetto-santa and stockings on feet blogs. :)

Okay, that’s it, only pictures of hillbilly dogs from now on!

Thanks for reading or just looking at the pics, Sis. Actually, I completely understand, and sometimes do the same thing. I have about 20 subscriptions, and I loathe long posts. I like a lot of the professional-type preacher/pastor blogs, but I don’t usually read posted sermons. I’ll admit that I prefer funny things to serious things. And personal pictures are the best!

If you are interested in what I’m reading, I’ve put a widget on the sidebar of the blog entitled, “Blogs I’m Reading.” It’s my “share” feed from Google Reader. So, out of all my subscriptions, if I come across something I think is worthy to share, but not going to blog about it, I’ll link to it there.

And Holly, please continue to assume I’m asking for your opinion on here. Thanks again…I can’t get any other friends or family to keep up with my blog half as much as you do. What’s that all about??
