April 26…planted

Purchased $7 worth of seed, sowed the watermelon, corn and cantaloupe in the ground, and started other seeds inside, but eventually these plants did not live.

Maybe a week later we purchased squash, zucc, cucumbers, tomatoes (cherry and regular) for about $15.

Also had to purchase new water hose sprayer. Also for $10 purchased four packs of six flowers to place in the flower garden.

Rows

Cucumbers….squash………Peppers

Zucchini……….Squash…………

Tomato (sweet million)….Tomato

Tomato (marion)……………………

Watermelon………………………..

Cantaloupe…………………………

Corn (early sunglow)…..(5 rows)…………………..

Notes:

  • Made rows about the width of my garden hoe. Planted about 100 corn plants (depended on how many seeds in the package with two seeds per planting) worked out to five rows and 20 plants per row.
  • Did not plant string beans this year.
  • Several squash (I think!) volunteered in the corn section from last year.
  • Next year plant the watermelon and cantaloupe like five plants in the shape of a X, with the X’s so many feet apart, then weed out.

May 23, 2008

  • I noticed some small green tomatoes on the cherry tomato bushes. I also found that most of the garden is covered in little green weeds. They are everywhere and cover the ground like a moss. I haven’t seen this before.
  • A few tomato plants and pepper plants have finally sprouted well in the little starter kit.
  • Also the squash plants that volunteered are blooming so we’ll have some produce soon. I was thinking that they must have gotten started the end of march to be producing now. And I guess I’ll be expecting the others that I planted to produce in probably the end of June.

  • Purchased seed and gardening tape for $4
  • Purchased stakes $5 and compost (8) $12

April 4…1/5″ rain

Plans are to till in leaves and compost soon. We’re having a pretty cold week next week. I’ll wait until after to sow.

April 8…Temperature was bleak for this weekend…we actually set a record low for this date in history. Woohoo!

High Temperature:
Actual: 58°F
Average: 75°F

Low Temperature:Actual: 27°F
Average: 47°F
Record: 27°F in 2007

April 11…I tilled some dead leaves into the garden and put up some stakes. If you look at the photo below, it really looks like I’m doing something big, but not a seed planted.

April 11…Had a great full day of rain. I had 1-1/2″ in the rain guage.

High Temperature:

Normal: 76°F

Low Temperature:
Actual: 46°F

Fri., April 13…purchased Sunflower seeds $1 for big pack, and four flower seeds for $0.25 ea.

Sat., April 14…I added compost and 10-10-10 to the garden, and re-tilled it. The tiller I was loaned is AWESOME!!! Thanks Kev. Since I had the tiller, I also made a flower bed near the side steps, and a sunflower bed. We’ll see how well this turned out. I’m hoping to see the sunflowers sprout within a week, based on what a friend’s did. The flowers, I’m not sure when I should see something. I sowed a lot of seeds so, I should see something, to say the least.

Sun., April 15…rain, rain, rain. Had 1-1/5″ of rain today

High Temperature: Actual: 78°F
Normal: 77°F
Record: N/A
Low Temperature:

Thurs., April 19…big rain last night. 1-1/2″ of rain by morning

High Temperature: Actual: 72°F
Normal: 78°F

Low Temperature:

The lows look good for planting early next week.

April 27…Still I haven’t sowed the garden yet…too much going on, but I did get a chance to arrange a little flower garden. You can see it in the background inside the stones. We’re getting rain today.

May, 11…Still no garden yet. It’s not the weather obviously. But I will be getting it planted this weekend. *fingers crossed* In the meantime we’ve had lots of rain (1/2″ one day, 1″ later). Below is a picture of my sunflowers

May 12…finally got the garden planted!!!! But I really hurt my back in the process. Pulling the tiller starter cord, I think I tore some muscle in my back. Alison was going to go out there and plant without me, so I pulled it together the best I could. She did a good job, too.

Purchased Tomato plants and pepper plants for $10

Below was my garden plan sheet. We ended up putting 8 rows instead of 7, and we didn’t plant as many seeds for the squash or beans.

Here are the flowers that I planted at the door back on April 27

May 26…worked the garden over again. Moved some plants, replanted others. watering it with the soaker hose for a long time today…we won’t have rain until maybe next Friday.

May 29…picked the first zuchinni from the garden (one of those volunteer plants).

June18…I’ve been working in the garden a good bit since my last entry. I’ve moved several plants to fill-in bare spots, I’ve seeded and planted additional watermelons (not all of them are going to make it), and I have put up my deer-repellant fishing line.

Some cucumbers from JB’s plants are producing now, too.

I purchased more Jiffy wafers (2) 24 packs for 1.99 each. I plan to start broccolli and cauliflower sometime in the future.

I also purchased a push brush broom for the carport ($15.97)

June 27

…The garden has just started producing beans; in fact, I guess I’ve missed their coming in by a few days, because they’re too long now. A few plants have been looking very poor. I don’t know if it is the heat or cut worms or what. It bothered me a lot that a catelope plant looks like it’s dying, and it had FRUIT ON IT! Errrr! All I know is that ants are all in the root. I put ant poison on it, and around it…Gee, I hope we don’t die from ant poison on the food???!!!
